about

The Native American flute occupies a special place in Native American mythology, a mythology that has been erroneously accepted by many as historical fact to promote the flute strictly as a man’s instrument, used primarily, if not exclusively, as a courting tool. Although the Native American flute was indeed utilized occasionally in courting, much like instruments employed in all cultures to express romantic desire, courting was not its only use, nor was the flute’s use restricted to men.

In pre-European America, Native American men, women, and children played the flute for entertainment, in fertility rites, during celebrations and mourning rituals, and whenever the musician felt like expressing his or her mood and talent. WindPoem albums celebrate the flute’s rich and inclusive heritage and history.
