about

The instrumentals on Mandostopheles defy categorization. Some blend Americana, bluegrass, and jazz, while others world, ethnic, and rock. Nevertheless, distributors, radio, and streaming services require music to be pigeonholed, so these tunes have been classified as jazz, or world jazz, or world jazz fusion. The thing is, they’re music, pretty good music, and you’ll either like or dislike it based on your own personal musical preference, not some algorithm or corporate hooligan focused on dollar signs instead notes and measures. I hope you enjoy listening to the work as much as I enjoyed writing and recording it.

“Mandostopheles,” “Night into Day into Night,” “Spontaneous Journey,” and “Where’s Hattie Rush” were not written for any particular person or event, but all others were inspired by my spouse, Bonnie, or events surrounding/involving her. “September 2” commemorates our wedding anniversary. I raise a toast to that most precious of people, my lifelong partner and best friend, Bonnie Lynne.
